THE BEGINNING
In the Summers 1920 and 1921, Phi Beta Sigma met in Atlanta where George Washington Carver spoke and many Educators were in attendance such as Tuskegee 2nd President, Moton and Miles College 2nd President, William A. Bell. On January 23. 1925, Miles College recognized Phi Beta Sigma as the First Organization on the Campus and became the 19th Collegiate Chapter to be established. It was an Honor to be named THEE Sigma Chapter. The Sigma Chapter was established by William A. Bell, 2nd President of Miles College as he was influence to join Sigma by his good friend and Colleague at Tuskegee Institute, President Robert Moton (Gamma Sigma Chapter, 1918).
1925-1940: SIGMA “CALL TO ARMS”
Sigma Chapter begin to grow instantly and showed signs of longevity from its beginnings. As time went on, WWI went into effect and the drafting of Soldiers commenced. During this time, the entire Sigma Chapter membership that was able, enlisted in the Armed Forces as it was a National Initiative by Phi Beta Sigma “Call to Arms”. Sigma Chapter answered the call, not once but twice. Soon after WWI, WWII depleted the Sigma Chapter and no members were left. During this time, the Men of Sigma were known as Business Oriented Men and Community Service Advocates.
1941-1950: Post War Rebirth
After WWII, Sigma Chapter was left with no Members and with the help of the Tau Sigma Alumni Chapter, Sigma stayed relevant on the campus of Miles College. In 1947, Miles College accepted 2 New Organizations of the Elite Eight (Alphas and Omegas) on the campus and they began to make an impact immediately. As the other Fraternities grew, Sigma Chapter would decrease in numbers, yet manage to still make an impact on Campus and in the community.
1951-1960:
Demetrius C. Newton, a Fairfield native and Lawyer made his mark at Miles College by inviting friend, Law School roommate, Civil Rights Icon, Martin Luther King to Miles Campus for a benefit Concert. Sigma Chapter maintained its Legendary status as an Elite Fraternity of Very Educated and Business Oriented Group of young Men. In 1957, Miles College added another Fraternity of the Elite Eight to the campus, Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma was the first Fraternity to welcome them with open arms. Sigma Chapter continued to be Campus Leaders and Ambassadors on the Campus.
1961-1970
Sigma Chapter start to transform as the 70s hit. The Societal change within All Organizations had become very outgoing as many Organizations appearance changed due to rise of the Funk Era. Sigma Brothers were one of the Organizations that lead the way to the Hip new style of the Funk Nation. This was also the Era Sigma Chapter caught on to the New Hand-Sign of Phi Beta Sigma as displayed in the Crescent Magazine.
1971-1980
During this Era, Sigmas continued to be involve in the SGA, Band and Athletics. Sigmas stayed involve in Student Activities to keep the School Spirit going.
1981-1990
This was the Era Sigma Chapter Numbers had diminish down to low number due to High Graduation Rate and the outflow of Pledging/Hazing and the College being on the verge of loosing Accreditation. Towards the end of the decade, Sigma Chapter maxes it’s way back with a bang introducing the largest line in the known History of the Chapter with 13 new members. At this time the enrollment at Miles College also grew.
1990-2000
Sigma Chapter started to make New waves at Miles College and the State of Alabama. With pumping out 5 or more members every Year, Sigma Chapter begin to grow up to 30 Members on Campus by 2000. Sigmas were the Largest Organization with members on the Football Team, Baseball Team, Band and SGA President. Sigma also made History in 1998 by breaking Racial barriers and initiating the First White Member (Joesph Cordell) into our Wondrous Band.
2001-2010
Sigma Chapter continued to Grow in numbers on Campus until 2006-07 due to Graduation with Over 20 Members getting their Bachelors Degree. In 2008 Sigma Chapter had a Rebirth in Initiating 7 New Members to Help our cause to speed on.
2011-Current
In 2012, the Sigma Chapter crossed its then Second Largest Line of 12 to reclaim itself as the largest Fraternity at Miles College. Soon after, the Chapter went through turmoil and overcame it and intimated the Largest known Line in Sigma Chapter with 14 in 2017. Today the Chapter continue to Grow and be prosperous.
